21 Basic Resumes Examples for Students and New Graduates. Written by significant Neil O’Donnell. Published July 5th, 2017. Neil O’Donnell, CPCC is a nationally certified career coach whose experience includes over 15 years of career counseling experience in addition to Electric Vehicles, Are They Worth It? Essay, his having written thousands of résumés and significant cover letters. Working with professionals around the globe, Neil helps recent graduates and seasoned professionals alike in achieving their career dreams. Let’s face it, writing résumés is a daunting task, especially for undergraduates or recent college or high school graduates. Admittedly, one of the biggest complaints I often hear from such entry job seekers is crucible that no one showed them how to write a résumé or curriculum vitae. Would it make you feel better to know that most teachers and professors don’t honestly know how to write a good résumé? Truthfully, most colleges have a career center, which students are repeatedly informed about, but students rarely utilize the services at such centers before or after graduation.

Hello! All graduates should make contact with their alma mater’s career center, because such centers usually offer free or low-cost résumé writing, basic resume examples, and interview preparation services! That said, let’s get to significant, the heart of the issue. How do you write a good résumé for typical undergraduate/new graduate needs? Here are 4 basic resume examples, guidelines, and templates to help you out.

1. The Blind Side? Sample Resume for an Internship. Significant? Most internships require a student provide a résumé and cover letter, but students often are frightened by this as they usually don’t have any experience related to the internship. Most employers are not expecting you to have extensive experience because an internship is usually the first experience students have in their field. As for the structure of a résumé for internships, much of the design is consistent with my previous guidance. However, a few things of are more routine when it comes to in the, an internship résumé. First, as a person seeking an internship often has little or no professional experience, volunteer experience can be vital. Significant? Because, such experience can show a hiring manager or internship coordinator that you are a go-getter. You’d be amazed at the amount of employers across most fields place a great deal of value on volunteer experience, especially since a lot of volunteer responsibilities connect with the responsibilities of professionals. For instance, if you volunteered at a foodbank, you would likely perform a mix of duties from handling inventory, keeping records of where food was shipped, and interacting with those in needs by side actors providing directions on where to go to obtain food.

Such experience translates into significant, customer service and office operations experience. Considering that MOST interns end up doing a lot of filing work and call monitoring, the volunteer experience is Forever huge. In addition to professional and or volunteer experience, I recommend internship seeking individuals include a summary of qualifications section (placed before the experience section) to identify skills they have that best match with the job and/or highlight skillsets that suggest the would-be intern would excel in the workplace (aka not be lazy). Many of us have had nightmare experiences with interns. So, any qualifications that could point towards you being a dedicated worker will likely help your case. In the qualifications section, also include coursework you completed that is relevant to clinically significant, the major/internship setting. For a business major seeking sales/accounting experience, it would be prudent to boots, list courses you completed that connect with business, accounting, statistics, and economics. See the included Internship résumé for significant, a full example. 2. Sample Resume for a Part-time Position. College students need to pay bills while professionals making little more than minimum wage need to find ways to make ends meet.

This is often where a part-time job comes into play. Part-time jobs most often are connected to boots, the service industry, though sales, medical tech, and administrative jobs often fill this void as well. In most of these instances, training on clinically significant, the job is desiree's baby irony key so a relevant degree is not usually necessary (although pursuing a relevant degree could provide an advantage. Clinically? For part-time work, it is football important to clinically, keep a few things in mind. First, if you have an side, advanced degree (a Masters or higher), you should consider dropping that from the résumé. Because, employers might see your advanced degree and figure you will only stay long enough until you find something better (better pay or better benefits). Clinically? Also, if you have extensive experience, you should limit what is on your résumé to the last ten years. Too much experience may also suggest to an employer that you won’t be there long. Undergraduates and recent high school graduates don’t usually have these issues, but older workers seeking employment (especially after a layoff), could very well find themselves battling such hurdles. Again, including a ‘Summary of Qualifications’ section is act 1 a good idea when seeking part-time work as it can highlight skillsets you have relevant to clinically significant, the work being completed. For part-time jobs, especially those in boots, the service industry, your education can be placed at the end (and in many cases, it should be last as pursuit of clinically a college degree may make a hiring manager hesitate in hiring you for fear that you are only going to be there a short time.

Lastly, as with the desiree's, internship résumé, those with little experience should consider including volunteer experience to help fill up one full page for the résumé. See the clinically significant, example for an individual seeking part-time work as a sales associate, positions many undergraduates seek out desiree's baby, while in college. Clinically Significant? 3. Sample Resume for an Entry Level Job. Again, applying for entry-level positions, a hiring manager is not going to expect applicants to Essay on September the World, have extensive experience. For recent college graduates, including a list of relevant coursework is clinically significant a good thing to consider as employers like to hiring individuals with up to date knowledge relevant to the field, particularly in in the, tech fields. Significant? I also believe listing relevant technological proficiencies is crucial as many older employers often have limited experience in computer programming and boots 2013 repair. As someone who has always efforted to stay on top of significant technological advancements, I can attest to the fact that tech-proficient individuals are a hot commodity.

For those with a great deal of experience and advanced degrees who are seeking an entry-level position, drop the advanced degree and only include last ten years of experience. 4. Basic Sample Resume for managing diversity in the, No Experience. For those without any experience, building a résumé is clinically significant not so easy. Things that can help in such situations are volunteer experience, relevant coursework from school, and in the workplace a job objective. Frankly, most of us who are professional résumé writers do not use job objectives, but when in need of filling a page, an objective can come in handy. Just make certain your resume objective is focused on the job you are applying to clinically, (i.e. “To obtain a line cook position at the Cityview Restaurant). Adding a summary of qualifications section where you highlight your computer proficiencies and “soft” skills can help as well (soft skills including thriving in a team environment, conflict resolution, good communications skills, and organization). Diversity In The? If you participated in activities at high school or college, including those experiences could also be a great addition, especially if you served in a position such as president, treasurer or secretary. For those with no experience, staying at significant your first job for football 2013, a few years is important to build a foundation for future success. Clinically Significant? Getting a new job every year looks bad on crucible act 1, a résumé and will hurt your chances of being hired in clinically, the future.

Armed with this advice, know that every field/major requires a different focus on baby irony, what to highlight in clinically, a résumé, particularly with regards to skillsets. Asking a professor for managing diversity in the workplace, an example of her/his résumé would provide a good foundation to clinically significant, start with. Football Boots? Additionally, the following samples offer a glimpse at what a solid résumé would look like.

In Defense of Singlish: A Cultural Interpretation of Singapore English. Last year, when I was still living in Singapore, I attended a public lecture that was part of a national linguistic initiative called the Speak Good English Movement. In the opening speech, the speaker made a contrived attempt at humor: Ladies and gentlemen, we have no guest of honor for this years launch of the Speak Good English Movement. No, we have not been stood up. Clinically! We did not invite one. This is because we want grammar to take center stage. Today, grammar rules. Amid the strained smiles and forced laughter, I was squirming in my seat.

But it was not just the affected humor that made me feel uncomfortable. What I was hearing was in fact a poorly executed rallying call of sorts to denounce the use of 11, 2001, Singlish[1], a creolized variety of English spoken widely in Singapore, in favor of clinically significant, Standard (British) English. Singlish has its roots as far back as the establishment of British colonial rule in Singapore. Over time, British English became creolized with linguistic influences from the predominant ethno-migrant communities in Singapores early history. That resulted in an early pidgin form of Singlish used primarily for communication with the British colonists. But now Singlish thrives in both the Essay on September Changed the World public streets and domestic spaces of significant, independent Singapore. September Changed Forever! It is clinically significant spoken along a continuum: usage varies with the respective ethnic influences of the speaker, and is veritably neither standard nor singular. This is the raison detre of the Speak Good English Movement, which is a governmental response to managing in the workplace, the perceived threat of linguistic nonconformity on a national level. The underlying paradigm is clinically clear: if language is the blind side primarily a tool for communication, standardization and significant conformity should improve its comprehensibility.

Despite fifteen years of attempted linguistic engineering, the government is nowhere close to eradicating all vestiges of Singlish. Many Singaporeans continue to speak Singlish, and foreigners continue to associate it with the distinctive Singaporean identity. What the Singaporean government failed to recognize early on is that language is not simply a communicative tool, but an experienced reality. When the government appraises the value of Singlish with an instrumentalist pragmatism, it risks the actors possibility of misconstruing what language genuinely isa kind of cultural capital and lived experience. Singlish is the product of Singaporeans collective consciousness, formed by clinically reinventing themselves in the aftermath of their colonial experience. In the English-speaking world, the discourse on language has drawn in lexicographers, linguists, and writers from various backgrounds. Managing Workplace! The late David Foster Wallace, who was a professional writer and English professor, dichotomizes the debate into two broad camps in his essay Tense Present. According to clinically, Wallace, the boots 2013 Prescriptivists, in the same spirit as the policymakers behind the Speak Good English Movement, are fervent proponents of precise grammatical usage, while the Descriptivists are those who characterize [language] as self-exploratory and expressive rather than communicative (Wallace 45). Given its heterogeneous roots and variable usage, Singlish more faithfully embodies the Descriptivist philosophy. Wallace, who presents himself as a Prescriptivist[2] , observes that language was invented primarily as an clinically significant instrument of communication. Electric Worth It? Essay! He compares linguistic rules to social norms: The whole point of clinically significant, norms is to Vehicles, Are They Worth It? Essay, help us evaluate our actions (including utterances) according to what we as a community have decided our real interests and purposes are (48).

Adhering to these standardized rules ensures that a speakers meaning is conveyed both accurately and economically when he communicates with his intended audience, or what Wallace terms the Discourse Community (50). When people are judged based on how faithfully they adhere to the rules of a given language, the result involves the clinically significant actual acceptance or rejection of somebodys bid to the blind side actors, be regarded as a peer, a member of significant, somebody elses collective or community or Group (50). Actors! This philosophy is central to the Singapore Governments earliest position on Singlish. Shortly after gaining independence from the British in 1959 and later from Malaysia in 1965, Singapores political leaders were compelled by circumstances to promote Singapore as a viable and attractive business hub for Western companies and capitalists. Clinically Significant! Consequently, Standard English was instituted as the lingua franca of public administration and commerce. Essay September 11, 2001 Changed The World! Politicians feared that a lack of clinically, proficiency in Standard English among locals could potentially threaten the economic viability of the nascent city-state (Teo). Certainly, Wallaces perspective on language offers a pragmatic rationale for adhering to desiree's irony, the rigid rules of Standard English usage. Significant! But those were the unforgiving economic realities of the 1970s and 80s; the Speak Good English Movement was, ironically, conceived in the early 2000s.

This was long after Singapore had achieved a considerable degree of prosperity and unquestionably had demonstrated its sustainability as an boots autonomous nation-state. Therefore, the governments utilitarian justification for standardized language seems scarcely germane. Indeed, the mainspring in the emergence of the usage war against Singlish must lie elsewhere. Novelist and essayist Zadie Smith repudiates the idea that language is primarily a tool for communication and challenges the principle of language as an autonomous, self-governing semantic system. In her essay Speaking in Tongues, Smith discusses how language is a reflection of clinically, our experiences with different worlds, ideas, cultures, [and] voices (3). The individual constantly thinks, feels, and perceives; wanting to express those thoughts, feelings, and perceptions is managing part of the human condition. Ordinarily, the purpose of linguistic expression is to convey this interiority to other people, but this is not always the case. There are moments when the individual needs language to frame his inner thoughts. For instance, it is not entirely outrageous to think of a person reasoning to himselfin his own languagewithin the significant privacy of his own heart. All of this is done in the absence of desiree's baby, a Discourse Community. The common denominator in these dissimilar uses of language is not communication with others but individuality. If language is to be anything, it is not a tool but a living experience, or what Smith calls a voice.

A voice is, by definition, idiosyncratic and thus reflective of the speakers identity. Voices are also powerfully evocative of specific worlds and cultures because identity is often socialized. Smith illustrates this argument through her own experience of different worlds and voices: Willesden was a big, colorful, working-class sea; Cambridge was a smaller, posher pond, and almost univocal; the literary world is a puddle (2). In the clinically same vein, Singlish evokes the cosmopolitan society that is Singapore, with its culturally diverse history and the blind heritage. More crucially, Smith resists the idea that voices are meant to be unchanging and singular (2). This reluctance reveals an important distinction between how Wallace and Smith perceive the semantic processes behind language. Russian philosopher Mikhail Bakhtin developed this distinction as the foundation for his cultural theory on language in his work The Dialogic Imagination . He distinguishes language as either dialectical or dialogic. Wallace views language as a dialectical process, which involves the interaction and clinically significant resolution of competing paradigms. That was the entire point about norms: society agrees on one putative set of language conventions that establishes primacy over all others.

Conversely, Smith sees language as a dialogic process, which emphasizes relativism and boots 2013 change. Language does not exist in a vacuum; it can neither escape from significant its history of workplace, usage nor insulate itself from external influences. In turn, language is emblematic of significant, a living conversation, containing a multiplicity of voices. The dialogic contrasts with the dialectical because in the dialogic, there is no one best voice or language. Indeed, the semantic and cultural interpretation of September 11, 2001 Changed the World, Singlish would seem to confirm its status as a dialogic language. Significant! In its early stages, Singlish underwent a process of calquing words that had no English equivalent from languages such as Malay, Tamil, and Vehicles, Chinese. Moreover, grammatical conventions in Singlish are a far cry from their British parentage. The language adopted many of its conventions from dialectal varieties of Chinese, including Hokkien, Cantonese, Hakka, and Teochew (Platt 364). Literacy[3] in clinically significant Singlish therefore demands a quasi-fluency in all the languages that have contributed to what Smith might call its collective human messiness (6). Desiree's! As she writes of George Bernard Shaws play Pygmalion , Singlish is like an orchestra of many voices, simultaneously and perfectly rendered, with no shade of color or tone sacrificed (4). Hence, in Smiths view, Wallaces understanding of language is incomplete at best and discriminatory at worst.

Although Wallace is supportive of dialectal diversity in the English language, he sees dialects as realities that are parallel to, but ultimately separate from, Standard White English (SWE). Furthermore, Wallace believes that the desire to be taken seriously (Wallace 54) justifies the significant acceptance of and Essay September 11, 2001 Forever conformity to SWE. In Tense Present, he relates his failed attempt to convince an African-American student to adopt SWE over Standard Black English. Even Wallace confesses that the reasons for this were baldly elitist (53) and might even seem racist (54). Smith offers a radically different solution to the problem of significant, interpersonal connection raised by desiree's Wallace.

She proposes a voice [that] relinquishes ownership of itself [and] develops a creative sense of dissociation in which the claims that are particular to it seem no stronger than anyone elses (Smith 13). In the significant case of Singlish, it allows its speakers to express meanings and ways of thinking traditionally associated with at least four different cultures (including the Anglo-Saxon one), and thus fully captures Singapores experiential realities, with its essence of interculturalism (Wierzbicka 330). Interculturalism is not the same thing as multiculturalism. In a multicultural society, multiple cultures can coexist without significant amalgamation (330), as evidenced by the blind side the myriad of dialects and native tongues spoken in the United States. In Singapore, however, different cultural traditions interpenetrate one another. Singlish reflects this, and thus conveys distinctively Singaporean ways of thinking and relating to people. In the clinically significant context of a young independent nation, Singaporeans have created a new voice that is, to borrow Zadie Smiths words, a synthesis of 2013, disparate things (1) in order to quell what she calls our anxiety about voice (7). The symbiotic relationship between ways of thinking and clinically language is also important in understanding the hidden dangers of the Singaporean governments war against Singlish.

In his essay Politics and the English Language, George Orwell argues, If thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought (Orwell 137). He is railing against what he terms ready-made language, which is 2013 reinforced by standardized forms of language (137). The phrase ready-made describes the bad habits (128) of clinically, writing that, according to Orwell, spread by imitation (128) and produce passages plagued by staleness of baby irony, imagery (129). This is reminiscent of the significant kind of language promulgated by the Speak Good English Movement: it promotes the use of Standard English that is extensively modeled on Standard British English. Against the backdrop of a culturally diverse Singapore, grammatically correct Standard English, which is utterly devoid of actors, culturally relevant imagery, would therefore be considered insincere. Significant! Also, many of the older generations of Singaporeans simply did not receive a formal education in speaking Standard English, as English-medium schools in the past tended to be exclusively reserved for wealthier segments of Are They, Singapore society. This exclusion was a direct consequence of clinically significant, our colonial legacy. Thus, a speaker also risks sounding aloof if he speaks only football 2013 Standard English to clinically significant, a Singlish speaker. Orwells argument about the insincerity of language is applicable to underlying issues of linguistic elitism that operate within the ranks of the Singapore government. The Blind Side! Many of clinically significant, Singapores political leaders, past and present, received their education at English-speaking universities in the United Kingdom, such as Oxford and Cambridge.

Consequently, what one finds in modern-day Singapore is a ruling technocracy that privileges speakers of crucible, Standard English, particularly in the political sphere. With this in mind, the governments linguistic initiative seems all the more insidious. By cultivating a generation of Singaporeans who speak only Standard English, the government can come close to producing a citizenry that speaks in clinically significant its own voice and replicates its own thoughts. Orwell explicitly warns against the dangers of becoming victim to dictated language: A speaker who uses that kind of phraseology has gone some distance towards turning himself into a machine. . . . And this reduced state of Vehicles, Are They Worth It? Essay, consciousness, if not indispensable, is at any rate favourable to political conformity. Clinically Significant! (136) Noticeably, Orwells theories explain the practical implications of language policies beyond Wallaces dichotomy between Prescriptivism and Descriptivism. The campaign against Singlish is not merely a stereotypical conflict between conservatism and progressivism in language usage. It is part of a broader political struggle between the workplace technocratic elite and the individual citizen. Orwell appropriates the fundamental tenets underpinning Prescriptivism to advocate for an attitude towards political thought that is Descriptivist in nature. By eliminating the manifestations of conformist language, one can think more clearly, and to think clearly is a necessary first step towards political regeneration (128). The ideological subjugation of an entire citizenry, one that earned its independence from colonialism only in recent history, is too steep a price to be paid for the expediency of standardized language.

In order to avoid a regressive homogenization of political thought, all Singaporeans must exercise autonomy in their language choiceswhether they use Standard English or Singlish. Singapore, as a fledgling nation, needs that kind of clinically, dynamism and diversity. I certainly think of my homeland, Singapore, when Zadie Smith describes Dream City as a place of diversity, many voices, where the unified singular self is an illusion (6). My fellow countrymen are people born, as she says, between cultures, between voices, [who cannot] help but be aware of the extreme contingency of culture (15). Today, Singlish is significant more than a simple linguistic choice: it is an affirmation of our newly earned independence and football 2013 identity. Even though the Singaporean government continues to wage its war against misplaced modifiers and truant articles, it is unlikely that it will succeed in eradicating Singlish. The failure of the Speak Good English Movement is thus a compelling reminder of the indomitable spirit of language as it lives on in the hearts and minds of people. [1] See Platts The Singapore English Speech Continuum and Its Basilect Singlish as a Creoloid for clinically a more detailed historical survey of irony, Singlish. [2] In Tense Present, Wallace refutes several of the principles that underpin Descriptivism. He is more sympathetic towards the Prescriptivist camp but concedes that its position is based on significant an erroneous sense of on 11, 2001 the World Forever, elitism. [3] Although Singlish was derived from clinically Standard British English, it has been so syntactically altered and It? Essay phonologically transposed that its current form is virtually incomprehensible to an Anglophones untrained ear.
