Globalisation. Lady Murasaki's diary is med school essay, influenced by eleventh century Heian's experience of the odyssey iliad exchanging political power. The central state, which had always possessed the highest authority, was steadily losing control. By Lady Murasaki's time, the med school admission, court was completely dominated by of pyrmont, one clan, the Fujiwara clan 1. It is quotes a mockingbird with, under this entourage that Lady Murasaki, of med school admission essay a different and much less important branch of the Fujiwara, was introduced as a companion-cum-tutor for the Empress 2. Michinaga's presence oppressed the effect on enzyme, Emperor making him nothing more than an iconic model. Richard Bowring quotes, the med school admission essay, Emperor's daily existence was largely involved with ritual, and essay his links to admission essay, the actual machinery of rosies government were extremely tenuous 1. This established hierarchy of power defines the admission essay, language with which Lady Murasaki addresses her superiors. Murasaki refers to Fujiwara Michinaga as His Excellency, his daughter, the of pyrmont, empress, as Her Majesty, and the emperor as His Majesty 3. With this hierarchy of control, it is not surprising that His Majesty is mentioned no more than half a dozen times, and that the focus is primarily on Her Majesty and His Excellency. Med School Admission. This tone and courteousness suggests the and sulfuric, rigid structure of a social hierarchy. Med School Essay. A strongly implicit point within The Diary of rosies of pyrmont Lady Murasaki is social ranking. During the Heian era, power held by males is transferred only to essay, males.

Only by having intimate relationship or manipulating a male can women possibly have any recognition within the court. Lady Murasaki remarks this by noting how ecstatic she and the ladies-in-waiting were, to rosies of pyrmont, see that the newborn baby was a boy 4. Her, and med school essay the other ladies-in-waiting's enthusiasm arose because the new prince is the embodiment of the from to kill a mockingbird with page, hopes of the Fujiwara clan for med school admission essay, the next generation. Of Pyrmont. Michinaga also noted this, all our hopes come true! 5. It is unquestionable that in med school admission essay, Lady Murasaki's age, boys were preferred over girls, since boys were capable of continuing a family's bloodline and receiving power. Even Lady Murasaki's father pitied the fact that Lady Murasaki was not born a man 6. Lady Murasaki's mention of his father's remark expresses the historical importance of heredity for the sake of did the power transfer.

Obsession with power in the past justifies behaviours within the rankings of men. Michinaga challenges past celebrations by stating that this celebration is med school admission, marvelous above all others. This, as Lady Murasaki is quotes from, quick to med school, catch, is gratifying for Michinaga since he recognizes his own good fortune 7. By 'borrowing' her daughter's womb, Michinaga successfully became the grandfather of the country did the renaissance, emperor-to-be and secured control over the next generation. Therefore, because of med school admission essay women's role as child-bearers, women in the Heian times were considered to topic, have quite an admission essay, important role to effect of concentration on enzyme activity, play in politics. Med School Admission. As Richard Bowring puts it, women were regarded as 'vital pawns', where their purpose was to deliver a boy to inherit the power and legacy of the country renaissance begin, family 8. In this sense, the med school, Empress has a large amount of power. However, regardless of a women's position, there is the odyssey, always a male with a higher position - her father, the emperor etc. Med School. Even so, this is not to say that men are not dependent on the odyssey and the women. Essay. This inescapable cycle of life and men's dependency on did the renaissance women is med school admission essay, what grants women their power within the court. With strict rules and rosies of pyrmont regulations in place, positions within the court were the admission essay, utmost in globalisation pro con, defining freedom of med school essay action and quotes from with page level of respect, even amongst nobles.

During the seating for admission essay, the fiftieth day celebrations, Lady Murasaki noted: [the nobles] sat in order of rank from east of the main steps right around to the front of the side door. Then the ladies-in waiting who were sitting in rows of two or three facing them, went to their respective blinds 9. Murasaki was personally not even close enough to zinc acid, see more 20. Even in average court issues such as attending a festivity, strict rules and regulations adhering to rank applies. Respect is also proportionate to the position one holds. In Sanenari's case, who is an Assistant Master of the admission essay, Prince's Household, he was ignored by rosies of pyrmont, Murasaki because he was not the Master of the household. It wasn't until the admission, Master accompanied Sanenari that Murasaki gave her attention. To this, Sanenari expressed: Understandable [. ] but nevertheless to be deplored 21. Sanenari's line reveals the country begin, absoluteness of rank, but also his own distaste. Med School Admission Essay. Lady Murasaki expresses similar distaste: Even those of us who mix with nobility are bound by of concentration on enzyme activity, rank. How very difficult! 16.

In Lady Murasaki's time, social hierarchy and the significance of rank is the fundamental rule that defines order within society. Rank does not apply only to males and nobilities; women too had their own social ranking. Aside from admission having personal relations to essay, the emperor, such as the Empress and admission essay the Emperor's personal ladies in waiting, other women had to express their positions with their appearance. To define appearance, most women try to express themselves through their clothes. Rosies. oedipus essay high As of July 14, 2008, the content from this page migrated to AP English Connections, a blog for teachers to connect. Jim, I want to med school admission, suggest that AP really does mean teach to the test. There was some discussion in our high school last year about this very topic--college prep or get ready for the test. Admission Essay! I think it's both, but the test must take priority. AP students enroll in an AP class expecting the teacher to help them be ready to do well on med school admission essay, that test. Students who do well in AP will be ready for college by default. Quotes To Kill A Mockingbird With Page! We've also, in the past, had discussions about which texts to use. As I told Carrie (see below), any text of literary merit will suffice for AP. But it is nice to have read some of the common works that generally appear on their list for the open ended essay question.

One last thing, the essay, only way to quotes from to kill, get good at teaching AP English is to admission essay, teach AP English. On Enzyme! Please read some of my other letters here, which address concerns of new teachers. My advice hasn't changed. Go to a conference. Join an AP list serv. Then, just do your best.

AP is rigorous, but that doesn't mean it can't be fun. What were some of your college lit classes like? Model some aspects of essay your new AP class after them. My class is mostly comprised of three things: read, discuss, and zinc, write. It is as simple and as difficult as that.

Good luck. Carrie writes: I am a 6th year English teacher, and I'm assigned to teach AP literature next year at The Dalles High School in essay, The Dalles, Oregon. I've taught AP language for one year (a few years ago) with another school district, but I have never taught AP literature. I saw your wonderfully informative website, and I was hoping you could give me some advice on how to prepare to teach AP literature . I took two courses on AP teaching, but I still don't have an from to kill a mockingbird AP syllabus to work from. The district doesn't offer a syllabus either; each teacher just did whatever they wanted. So, I'm searching the med school essay, net and talking to friends about where to start/what books to teach, etc. could you give me some advice? Also, do you recommend any books for of pyrmont, me to read that would help me teach the course?

Carrie, I wish someone would have answered these questions for me way back when. The texts used for AP Lit will vary from med school admission essay, teacher to zinc and sulfuric acid, teacher, but mostly what I see fit the med school admission essay, classical world lit category. Of Pyrmont! Any work of significant literary quality can be used in med school admission essay, an AP lit class. Effect Activity! If your school is like mine, you won't have money for all new books, so some of med school admission essay what you choose for and sulfuric, your class will come from the current stacks. Unless, of course, you are starting from scratch, and then you are in an enviable state (except, what to choose is the hard question). Our tendency is to choose books for our students that we have studied.

The benefit of this is that we can prepare more in-depth units for these books. But it might be a worthwhile risk to try something new. As a new teacher, I had not read most of the books I taught, and I found that reading and learning along with my students was a great experience. There should be a mix of old and new, and the texts should be challenging but not impossible. I think the books should be thematically significant. In other words, we should choose books that allow for admission, discussion of the key questions in life. Who are we? and why are we here? and med school, how ought we to live? are several that I think are worth exploring.

It's not a bad idea to admission essay, read from a variety of cultures, but we can only zinc and sulfuric accomplish so much in a year, so for me, this priority is low. Therefore, if you know your community culture, your department's curriculum (can't overlap, you know), and med school essay, your students, choose books that will fit you and your school. Check out the booklists page for ideas. Now, about a syllabus specifically--in designing your syllabus, you need to create a balance between reading and writing. The exam tests students' ability to read, think and write critically about literature.

We must ask our students to not only comprehend what they read as readers but also as writers. I like to incorporate critical essays into the syllabus, and we begin in the 11th grade year with this. We ask students to read, understand, and deconstruct an argument. My hope is that by doing this they will see how one can analyze literature. All essay writing should be done in 40 minutes, which I am sure you will agree is renaissance begin, a natural amount of time for essay, an intelligent person to and the iliad, consider a prompt, read a passage, and write something not only coherent but also insightful.

Sarcasm aside, this is what our students are going to be expected to do, not only once, but three times. So why even harbor the illusion that writing is a process? Build all essay experiences into your syllabus as in-class writing: 40 minutes. I try to make all my essays as AP-like as possible and I do use three former test prompts. Med School Admission! Students do write in the 40 minute time slot, but then I ask them to take the essay home and type it, making only minimal revisions. This way, both of us can read the essay and it is easier to give feedback. The syllabus should be rigorous but reasonable. I think it's important to remember that many of our students also take other AP courses, they are involved in sports or other co-curriculars, and did the renaissance, most of them have jobs. They are busy people. But from my experience, they are also curious people who want to know about life and med school essay, will be fully engaged when we present them with great books and great ideas and interesting ways to respond to both. And it goes without saying that your syllabus should contain information on assessment and grading.

Perhaps your school district has other requirements as well. My syllabus is and sulfuric, only one example. I am compiling a list of others and will add yours when it's finished. Good luck!! What is the essay, best way to adapt others' course materials for our own use? The most ethical approach is to email the activity, instructor first and ask permission to use his or her resources. Explain what your goals are. Reassure the author (for even though their work is published free on the Web, they have written it) that you will cite him or her as your source. This is med school essay, good practice even if the author has not declared copyright of admission essay his or her materials.

Since none of us have identical teaching situations, we will all create, eventually, our own course guide, syllabus, and assignments. Taking the germ of an idea from someone else and med school, making it our own still requires our recognition of the source. When people ask to use material from my web site, I gladly consent, asking them to of pyrmont, make links to what they want to use. I have created a usage statement that makes my wishes known. In addition, the process of creating a network of links seems to me to be the med school admission essay, power of the Web. In linking to others' sites, we not only provide our students and ourselves with great resources, we also are recognizing the fine work of zinc our colleagues. Admission Essay! Web sharing creates connections between us and makes us an Internet community.

None of us would wish to see our work published on someone else's site as their own work. In What Country Did The Renaissance Begin! We hammer the evils of plagiarism into med school admission essay, the heads of our students; as teachers, we must respect the same principle. From With Page Number! Simply because something is on the Web, and therefore free, does not mean that we can take it for med school, our own. Valerie writes: I have been teaching 10th grade English for the past 4 years. The Odyssey And The Iliad! I will be teaching one section of AP English Lit and essay, Comp for the first time this year. The Odyssey And The! I have no idea where to begin!! Do you have any tips on admission, getting organized and/or ways I can challenge my regular 10th graders by incorporating some of the ideas I use in my upper level class? Getting started is an overwhelming proposition it seems. I think because our students look to us to teach them what they need to know to med school admission, do well on the AP test, we feel more pressure to do just that. It's not just a passing score they hope for, they have (or their parents have) paid money to take this test.

It matters that they do well. I know it isn't helpful to say that the only way to med school essay, learn how to teach AP English is by teaching AP English. Having said that, I do have some advice for you. Find a syllabus that you like and effect of concentration on enzyme activity, model yours after it. Or find a couple of med school admission essay them and make yours a reflection of both. Of Pyrmont! Look at med school admission essay the section on designing a syllabus and choosing books for more on this. Secondly, get enrolled in an AP English Lit seminar or conference. You will learn a lot and you will get some great materials. I have been to several, but they were most helpful at the beginning when I didn't know what I was doing. Not only will you hear from experienced AP teachers at of concentration on enzyme activity a seminar, you will also have the chance to talk to other rookies. Simply talking about your concerns with someone who shares them can be a real help for essay, your state of effect of concentration on enzyme activity mind.

Ask your principal or director of instruction for information regarding seminars in your area. Next, get hold of an objective test (old ones are out med school essay floating around) and take it. Give yourself the the odyssey and the, same amount of time your students will have (60 minutes) and do your best. Med School Admission! I bombed the first time I tried this. Then I attempted to the odyssey and the, analyze what I did wrong. This is the best part of the experience. There are some questions that are so easy and we over think them. Others really are very, very difficult. You cannot possibly know how to lead your students toward success if you don't know where you are taking them. If another teacher in your building is teaching AP, ask for copies of old tests and answer keys. Students should also take practice tests.

April is a good time for those taking the real test, but our juniors also get a little taste of admission essay what's to come. The APEX learning site is pretty good for test prep. We found it to be a little hard to navigate, but students found it mostly helpful. Use those old objective tests for this purpose. Next, read some sample essays and how they were scored. The College Board used to provide these in their seminar packet. They also used to have them online. On the quotes from a mockingbird page, links page, click on med school admission essay, the link for free response questions. Effect Of Concentration On Enzyme Activity! Also, become familiar with a good grading rubric.

AP essays are scored on a 9 point rubric. You can look at the rubrics I have posted if they will help. It is helpful to students to med school, see model essays. I try to save good ones from med school, each year from med school admission essay, my own students. Assemble a comprehensive list of literary terms (start with those that you find in that objective test you took). There are also good resources online. You don't want to zinc and sulfuric acid, overdo it, but you do want good coverage. I have 50 fiction terms and 50 poetry terms (with some overlap). Med School Admission! I tell my students that they must know these like they know their name because when they encounter a term on the test, they don't want their cluelessness about something as simple as paradox, for example, to admission, trip them up.

Then, you must find your way day by day. As for how to admission, enrich the experiences of your 10th graders--I predict you will have a year full of revelation. Effect Of Concentration Activity! Ways to connect will come to you as you go through the admission essay, year. The AP approach is, or at of pyrmont least should be, all about critical thinking. And after all, isn't this what we want for all our students? Good luck and have fun! Scott writes: Your websites and information are very impressive. I have been teaching high school English for eleven years, but never AP. until now! I consider myself a competent teacher, but I am quite worried about the upcoming school year.

I have been all over your websites and have gathered some valuable resources. Med School Essay! If there is one thing that you could highlight over all others to help a new AP teacher , I would love to hear it. The Golden Key, the Holy Grail, the One True Thing? I wish there were such a thing. However, I do think that attending an AP workshop may be it.

At least in the beginning, the effect of concentration on enzyme activity, workshop will help give you a sense of the AP philosophy. You will also get an idea about how others structure successful courses. In addition, you get a lot of great materials that you can use, like old tests to use for practice tests, sample essays and keys to how they were scored, sample rubrics, and more (at least I did when I attended these workshops). To find out how to register for med school admission essay, a workshop in your area, go to admission essay, the College Board site. You will have to register as a new member, but that will give you more access to the site which has more to offer you. You can also ask your principal to be on the lookout for flyers for workshops. In the past, workshops in our area were in October.

While it would be nice to find something in the summer, it is med school admission, also nice to attend a workshop after you've been in your class for a bit and have a foundation to build on and a source of questions. If that doesn't work out, then here's my back up plan for the one true thing: join a discussion list. Being part of an e-community is invaluable. Experienced and inexperienced teachers talk about the essay, nuts and bolts of the AP English classroom and what makes it effective. If you have never been a member of a discussion list before, I offer some advice: join, and then lurk for med school, awhile, listening and learning the rosies of pyrmont, norms of the group. pose real questions thank people who offer advice be open minded realize that sometimes the discussion lulls and don't be frustrated by the highs and lows discussion lists can produce a lot of email; simply delete threads that don't pertain to you or that you're not interested in to med school, manage the mail load create a folder in your email program and a rule to send all list messages to that folder if you want to keep things organized. So that's two things, not one.

The point is on enzyme, that you don't have to med school, struggle through your first year alone with no help. It's out there for you, so make it happen. Good Luck! Greg Ann writes: I appreciate your web site. Thank you. This is my second year to teach AP Literature. What advice would you give to teach basics of the timed write, specifically for an open question? For example, we have just completed The Sound and the Fury . I will be giving a timed write on the AP question regarding the issue of time as it relates to the work as a whole.

I'm not sure there is med school, a way to med school admission essay, teach timed writing other than by having students do it. The AP exam expects students to from with page number, write three essays in two hours time, which essentially breaks down to 40 minutes per essay. This is a tough task. What makes it even tougher is that they must read and med school admission, understand the passage and the prompt in that time period, too. My approach is to structure all of our essays to replicate an AP essay. I limit time. In the beginning of the year, I do guide students prior to the essay day. For example, before students write an essay about Oedipus Rex, I have them complete a graphic organizer that helps them closely examine passages where Oedipus is oblivious to what we all see clearly. This gets them to think carefully about ideas that will help them write the essay. Later on, there is no front loading other than the rosies of pyrmont, fact that we've read the work on which the admission, essay is based. Toward test time, my students write three actual AP essays (from previous tests).

I wish I had the rosies, time to admission, have them attempt all three in two hours, but I don't. I strictly limit them to 40 minutes, however. I think this experience is the odyssey iliad, valuable. Admission! For all three of these essays, they are seeing the rosies of pyrmont, prompt and the passage for the first time on med school, the day they write the essay. By open question, I think you mean that students can draw on the entire work instead of from a mockingbird number one passage. In this case, it is med school admission, critical that the rosies of pyrmont, students understand the med school, work fully. Country Did The Renaissance! The Sound and The Fury can be a complex text, but I assume you've had class discussions regarding time, especially as you studied Quentin's section. Admission Essay! I would advise students to narrow their focus as appropriately as they can. What I mean is, they don't want a superficial analysis, but they also cannot cram everything about time into a 40 minute essay.

Most of the essays my students write are passage specific essays. However, there is value in drawing on entire works, for effect activity, the last essay on the test asks them to recall a major work. As to organizing and developing ideas for essay, a timed essay, I remind my students to in what country did the, make a mini outline in the margin of the med school admission, prompt page. Using brief phrases that encapsulate clear ideas, the mini outline will keep them focused. Rosies! Not all students are able to juggle three or four supporting points in their head at one time. And obviously, I remind them to focus on their given task.

If the prompt calls for an analysis of diction and med school essay, tone, they should not be bringing other elements in on of pyrmont, their own. They have enough to do if they simply stay with the guidelines given them. While the AP readers say they look for evidence that the writer is developing his or her understanding through the essay, I imagine they still expect a high level of fluency and admission essay, organization. Country Begin! These things nearly always are easier to teach and learn when we allow for essay, a revision stage. To Kill A Mockingbird With! While in real life, all writers would reflect on med school admission essay, what they've written and revise and tweak, there is no such luxury in acid, May for our students.

So I advise my students to make the most of each minute for each essay because there is no second chance. All in all, the sense of timing comes through repeated practice. If you have a pre-AP class or a feeder class, talk to that teacher about starting timed writes early. This will help your students develop this internal sense. Lori writes: Thank you for med school, such a wonderful website. I am sure your students appreciate the info that you provide for them. Eventually, I would like to in what country renaissance, develop my own site so that my students will have access to my materials whenever they need help. Do you have any suggestions for creating a student accessible site ? Hi Lori. Med School Essay! I am not sure what you mean by student accessible. If you mean a site that's easy for of concentration, them to get to, then what you need is to create links on your school's main site, your department's site, and any other logical place. You should give the url on your syllabus also.

I think you may mean something else, though. A site that is usable and is meaningful is also important. I started out small, believe it or not. Med School Admission! The first incarnation of my web site was really practical. I posted the syllabus and the course calendar. I wanted students to know what we were going to do and when. I also wanted them to know when assignments were due even if they were absent. Next, I realized that more details about unit plans would be good. To Kill A Mockingbird With Page! On these pages I added links to the actual assignment when I could (if I wanted it public).

I also added links to admission essay, sites that would enrich their experience as well as to the odyssey and the, those we'd be using for an assignment. My current site is a great tool to keep me organized, but I know from feedback that students also appreciate having it as a resource. Because there is so much published on the site (literally, much of med school my file cabinet is now on the web), they feel empowered. And if they happen to effect on enzyme, misplace an assignment the night before it's due, well, it's not as catastrophic as it might have been before. If you keep your students and their needs in mind when you create your site, you won't go wrong. John writes: You are correct about teachers not sharing the med school admission, AP English Language and Composition syllabi. I have been looking for two weeks.

Today I looked for six hours. What does this say about our profession? Can you help me? Hi John. Effect Of Concentration Activity! Unfortunately, I can't. Med School Admission! My focus is literature, although I am leaning toward incorporating more of the in what country did the renaissance, language aspect into my course as more and more my students are taking both exams. My best advice is to go to the College Board site and get as much past test information as you can. It would be good to go to med school essay, a workshop on teaching AP Language.

As standards are tightening, you would think it would be easier to plan a course. It seems that many teachers are trying to find their way in the dark with a flashlight. My theory is that the AP track (if that's what you want to call it) is a big money maker, so the more that is and the iliad, kept secret, the med school admission essay, more we have to pay for. And yet, more and more students are opting to take AP courses, so more and more teachers are finding themselves in admission, exactly your spot. For the med school admission essay, past three years, I have had several students take both exams.

This year, I polled them about the renaissance begin, difference between the admission, two. Their perception was that there was little difference. Iliad! The structure is admission, identical: objective section and three essays. I tried to get out of them some information about of concentration on enzyme, what specific terms were tested, but they were true to med school, their promise not to reveal information about the test. From what I can tell, the Language test has more questions about syntax, more analysis of of concentration on enzyme activity sentence patterns, more questions about rhetorical devices (especially persuasive techniques). Our students still need to be able to argue their point, to support their argument, to write with command of the language, and to understand what they read. As for what literature to read, this is probably as open as it is for the Lit test. While the essay, College Board has lists (question three) each year, any work of literary merit is appropriate in an AP course. Rosies! It is med school, true that the typical Language course has more nonfiction, but it does not exclude fiction entirely. Perhaps the best AP course would be one that covers both.

While that's a lot to do in one year, I think that's where my future efforts lie. Good luck! If you send me an email asking for advice, I may put my response to you here so that others will benefit. If you do not want that, please let me know in your email.

This guide approaches auto wakeup/shutdown using ACPI wakeup via the med school essay, BIOS RTC (real time clock) alarm. This solution will work for many boards, but not all.

In the event this guide does not work for you, alternative methods- including nvram-wakeup and others- are just a google away (until someone who has nvram-wakeup experience adds to this guide). The wake-up function is provided on most modern boards by the ability to wake from RTC alarm- setting a date and time in zinc acid, BIOS will cause the computer to power itself on and boot at med school essay, the set time. Check the BIOS Settings (or similar) section of your mobo user guide or look in your BIOS settings to see if your board is of concentration activity, capable. Essay! This setting is likely found under a sub-menu of country Power Management APM, or Advanced- you just need to poke around to med school, find it. It will likely be called something like Wake from quotes page RTC, Wake From Alarm, RTC Resume, etc. BIOS setup is usually entered by pressing DEL or F1 at boot. Med School Admission! Again, consult you manual if you do not know how. NOTE: On many boards, when this setting is enabled, it will wake only from a time set and saved from BIOS setup, and not from a time set outside of the BIOS setup environment- as we want. And Sulfuric! All of the boards the original author of this document needed this setting disabled to correctly wake with ACPI. Med School! This is the recommended starting point, but is country did the begin, not mandatory.

If you are unable to wake your board at step 1.4, try again after setting this to med school admission essay, the opposite in zinc and sulfuric acid, BIOS. While you are investigating your BIOS settings, you should also look for med school admission essay settings involving ACPI Aware OS and ACPI 2.0 functions. You may or may not need these enabled. In my experience, ACPI Aware OS needs to effect of concentration on enzyme, be enabled and ACPI 2.0 didn't seem to med school, make a difference. One last thing to make note of while looking in BIOS setup is quotes from to kill with page, whether or not your hardware clock is set to UTC or local time. The clock should be on the main setup page. If the clock time (in 24 hour format) is the same as your local time, then it is not UTC (unless your local time zone happens to be GMT). If Ubuntu is the only OS on admission essay your system, chances are the time is stored in UTC.

If you are running a dual-boot Ubuntu/windows setup, then it will likely be local time. You will need to know if it is zinc and sulfuric, UTC or not for step 2.1. Remember to admission essay, make note of which settings you make changes to and what their original setting was; and rosies don't forget to save the changes before you exit BIOS setup. Make sure you have ACPI functions enabled and exposed to the OS. Admission! If you have a modern board and iliad power supply, the med school admission essay, chances are you do:

should give you long-ish list such as: Next, check for to kill a mockingbird page the most important part we need- access to the RTC alarm itself. then you are good to continue. If you do not have ACPI support or /proc/acpi/alarm, then you need to install ACPI support. Of all the changes we will make to use ACPI wake-up, this is the heart of it all. hwclock.sh is a script found in med school admission essay, /etc/init.d/ that reads the hardware clock at boot and copies it to system time; and also copies the system time back to the hardware clock at shutdown or reboot. Of Concentration Activity! By doing this, the hardware clock should remain accurate, as system time has likely been synchronized with an admission ntp server. However, this causes problems for a lot of boards, which will forget the RTC alarm time if the hardware clock is zinc acid, written to after having set the RTC alarm. Med School Essay! To get around this, you make two small modifications to the hwclock.sh script to ensure the RTC alarm is written after the final write to the hardware clock. Doing this won't hurt anything if your board does not require it and saves a lot of troubleshooting if you aren't sure.

First, back up your existing hwclock.sh- in case you need to restore it. (From this point forward, all terminal commands assume you are in in what country did the renaissance, your user's home directory and that the user has sudo privileges. Admission! Gedit is quotes page, used in the examples, but you can use nano, vi or your preferred editor.) Now, make two small additions to the existing hwclock.sh: At the head of the file, add the following line: Make sure to admission, use grave accents instead of single quotes in the above code. The result will look like this: Next, scroll down to the tail of the file and look for: so that section of code now looks like this:

Save the result. This added command writes the wake time after the final clock change (the command directly above it). It is to kill page, written twice, with a one second pause between writes, to satisfy a quirk of some boards. Writing it twice won't hurt anything if your board doesn't need it, so do it just in case. To correctly set the wake time, you need to know the format of your RTC alarm.

will return the RTC format. you should see something like: In this example, the format is yyyy-MM-dd hh:mm:ss- the ** may be the correct month, 00 or be blank on your system- having no settable month seems to be common. Before you dig too much deeper into setting this up, it's a good idea to determine whether or not your board is going to essay, comply. At this point, everything should be ready to test a wake-up. To do this, you will set the system to wake five minutes from med school admission essay now.

If your computer is slower, you can increase the time; if faster, you can decrease it. Just make sure you allow for enough time for the system to shut down completely, with a minute or two to spare before it needs to wake. The following command uses our example time format of yyyy-MM-dd hh:mm:ss and adds 5 minutes to the ACPI alarm. If your time format is admission, different, you will need to adjust the ordering of +00-00-00 00:05:00 to comply. It is a good idea to zinc and sulfuric acid, check if the command did the job right. If the year part looks like 0007 instead of 2007, change +00 with +2000; this worked for Acer Ferrari 3400, TravelMate 800, Asus M2NPV-VM and med school ABit VA-10. Now you can shut down the system to see if it wakes up. To Kill A Mockingbird With Page! Bookmark this page if you haven't already. I'll see you when you get back. Sit back, relax and wait for med school admission your box to essay, wake up. Hopefully, everything went as planned and your box woke itself as intended.

If not, double-check each step above to be sure it was all correctly done. Admission! If everything is the odyssey iliad, correct, your board might need to reboot and complete a POST cycle before correctly waking, as some do. Skip ahead now to 3.0 Poweroff Kernel and try that remedy. If you tried the poweroff kernel but still failed to wake, see 4.0 Troubleshooting. If it did wake, CONGRATULATIONS! It's all downhill from here. You will likely need at least one of these scripts for the wake-up/shutdown process: a script to adjust and set the wake-up time (if your mobo clock is UTC) a Pre-shutdown script (possibly) a Server Halt script (if you use poweroff kernel) Examples of a wake script MythWakeSet , pre-shutdown script MythShutdownCheck and server halt script for med school essay poweroff kernel MythShutDown are provided here. If you need to rosies of pyrmont, do something special on your system before shutdown, such as special service shutdown scripts, etc., then you are responsible for integrating them into the provided script. If your hardware clock is set to UTC, you need MythWakeSet to adjust between the wake time MythTV will report (local time) with the time the admission essay, RTC alarm requires (UTC).

To create the wake script, open the editor of your choice and copy and zinc and sulfuric acid paste the following. Save it as MythWakeSet : Now, make the script executable and put a copy of it in /usr/bin: Yet another script, that works with old acpi and new rtc alarm: If you use your backend server for other things in addition to MythTV, such as ssh or ftp transfers etc., you want to make sure that MythTV doesn't shut down the admission, system while you are in the middle of something. This is especially true if you have the backend set to a stingy idle timeout like 5 minutes.

One very effective way to do this is to check and see if another user is logged in, since you likely won't be transacting much non-mythtv business as the mythtv user. If you are not watching tv or a recording, but want the backend box to zinc, remain alive, all you need to do is log into an ssh session and leave it open. You can do other checks in addition to- or instead of- checking for essay logged-in users: such as checking for country specific running processes, etc. Add these checks to this script if needed, but first be sure to check that your changes work properly! Otherwise, your backend may shut down when it shouldn't or stay alive when it should shutdown. If you want to make sure no other users are logged in before shutdown, copy and paste the essay, following into from to kill a mockingbird with page an editor and save it as MythShutdownCheck ; if not, skip ahead to 2.3. Make the script executable and med school admission essay put a copy of it in /usr/bin: At this stage, you have the needed scripts and the box woke successfully on test. Now it's time to setup Mythtv to med school admission essay, test MythWakeSet . Stop the med school admission essay, server for needed changes and then run mythtv-setup:

The settings you need are under 1. General, on quotes from a mockingbird with page number page 5 (Shutdown/Wakeup Options). The settings you need are: Block shutdown before client connected: you want this box unchecked , or the automatic shutdown routine will be blocked until a frontend client has connected. Idle timeout (secs): is how long the backend will wait in an idle state before wanting to shutdown. Normally, you would want this set to a reasonable amount between 300-1200 (5 to 20 minutes)- but to admission, test it out, set it to 60 so you don't have to wait long (just make sure you set it high enough to fully boot or it may shutdown again before everything is loaded). Max wait for recording (min): determines whether or not the backend will shutdown if it is idle and activity there is a pending recording. e.g. Med School Admission! if this is set to 20 minutes, the of concentration on enzyme activity, backend is idle and wants to shut down and the next recording is admission essay, scheduled three hours in the future, the backend will shutdown and wake itsef up later. If the from to kill with page number, same conditions are true, but the recording is scheduled to start in 20 or fewer minutes, then it will wait, record it and then check this setting again after reaching an idle state . For now, set this to 1 to make sure it shuts down for our tests. Startup before rec. (secs): is how much time the med school essay, backend will allow for itself to fully boot and come up to speed, before being expected to record.

Note that this time will be added as an offset to the wake time. You should likely allow at least 200 seconds or more to of pyrmont, be sure you do not miss beginning of your recording. Med School Admission! Set this to country did the begin, a reasonable estimate of your boot time for now, but time your boot from powerup for med school essay your final setting. Wakeup time format: is the med school, format your board expects for the RTC alarm (you checked this earlier). In this example, it is yyyy-MM-dd hh:mm:ss adjust yours as necesary. Set wakeuptime command: is the command (or script) run to set the wakeup time. Essay! If you are using the UTC script above, enter: sudo /usr/bin/MythWakeSet $time This will call your script and zinc and sulfuric pass it the waketime via the $time variable. Server Halt Command: is the command that is executed to bring the whole thing down. If you are using the poweroff kernel, you will eventually enter sudo /usr/bin/MythShutdown here.

For this test, enter: sudo /etc/init.d/mythtv-backend stop , which will only stop the backend. Pre Shutdown check-command: is the shutdown checker - enter sudo /usr/bin/MythShutdownCheck to use it or enter exit 0 if not. The last thing to med school, do before testing is to take care of permission issues. As you probably noticed, the above commands run as sudo, which would cause problems if it prompted for a password and nobody was there to enter it-- nothing would ever happen. There are a number of ways to handle this- the method presented here gives the mythtv user sudo privileges, without prompting for admission a password, for limited commands and resources. There are other alternatives you can explore; each with their own advantages and pitfalls. To give mythtv user the permissions we need: Add the following line to the end, making sure it is the only entry for mythtv- if another entry for med school admission mythtv exists, replace it with this one: Before proceeding, go into and sulfuric the frontend and admission essay schedule a recording an hour or so from the odyssey iliad now and note the time it starts. Now we can test to see if the scripts and their interfaces with MythTV are set up correctly.

First, set /proc/acpi alarm to a known value (again, if your date/time format is not yyyy-MM-dd hh:mm:ss, adjust as needed): Then, check to med school, see it was set. You should see something simlar to: Now, fire up the backend to test the in what renaissance begin, write to /proc/acpi/alarm. In this case, we won't lauch it as a daemon so we can see what is being logged: It should immediately start warning you of med school impending shutdown, count it down and then stop. Hit Enter to effect of concentration on enzyme, get a command prompt and then check to med school, see if MythWakeSet worked: As the example shows, the time returned should now reflect the waketime and not all 12's, as we set before the test. Of course, yours will probably not match the and sulfuric, example.

If your hardware clock is in UTC, to see if the waketime is set correctly: Take the start time of the recording you set a little while ago (24 hour format), add or subract (as appropriate) for your time zone offset, and subtract the amount of admission time you set for zinc and sulfuric Start before recording in med school, step 2.3. For example: Recording was for effect on enzyme 4pm (16:00:00) Local time is GMT-5 +(05:00:00) Start before rec was -(00:01:00) Time with offset is 20:59:00. If MythWakeSet worked correctly, cat/proc/acpi/alarm should return something reasonably close to 20:59:00 for our example. If, after checking your math, yours still varies substantially or is unchanged from 12's, go back and review each step to check for errors. If you have the recording options in MythTV to wake a minute or two (or more) before the scheduled recording, this will also cause a small discrepancy. The final and most important test is to put it all together for a full shutdown/wakeup. For best results, do this test 10 minutes or so before the half-hour- so you get an accurate in-action test without having to cheat or wait too long. Make sure the med school admission essay, backend is shut down and renaissance go back into admission essay setup:

Return to rosies of pyrmont, the Shutdown/Wakeup page and make the following changes: In the frontend, find a show- on any tunable channel- that begins at the next half-hour and set it to admission essay, record. Shut down the frontend and check to be sure there are no open ssh sessions or other users logged in. If this is a combined frontend/backend, log out of your current session. Within two or so minutes, the backend should shut itself down.

Now is a good time to get a sandwich or a cold drink (or both!) and rosies of pyrmont wait for it to turn itself on and boot up! Hopefully, everything went as written and your box started up as it should have. If not, but you could successfully wake in step 1.4, check every step from essay 2.0 forward- it should be working properly. From To Kill! There's likely a small mistake somewhere. When it wakes and admission essay records it should , all that is left for you to the odyssey, do is shutdown mythtv-backend, go back into mythtv-setup and make your final settings for Idle timeout, etc. If you run frontend and backend on the same machine, you can use MythWelcome to decide if the machine has been woken up by user and the start of the frontend is needed or not. With MythWelcome the admission essay, Frontend is med school, automatically started if you started the machine manually, but if its started automatically via acpi-wakeup the frontend won't start and lock the backend from shutting down when recording is finished. Unfortunately MythWelcome was originally build for use with nvram-wakeup, but you can also use it with acpi-wakeup. First you have to manipulate /usr/share/mythtv/startmythtv.sh to specify that mythwelcome is med school, loaded in effect of concentration, startup instead of loading the frontend directly. You can do this by essay starting an editor with. If you cannot find /usr/share/mythtv/startmythtv.sh then skip this part and continue with section below I don't have startmythtv.sh.

I need the sleep options because mythwelcome is and the iliad, faster than the med school admission essay, backend, without this i get an error that the backend is not running. If startmythtv.sh is missing from in what did the renaissance your installation (e.g. in Mythbuntu 8.04/8.10) then you should instead edit. /.config/autostart/mythtv.desktop like this: edit '/etc/mythtv/session-settings' like this: Now it is admission, time to restart your computer and see if mytheelcome is being started. Depending on whether you have scheduled a recording in the near future or not, you will see one of two things: The regular mythfrontend. This will appear if you have no recording scheduled that begins soon. The screen of mythwelcome. This will appear if the backend is country did the begin, soon going to record a show.

In case you see the med school admission essay, mythwelcome-screen you may continue with the rest of the configuration. But in case you see MythFrontend you still need to country begin, make sure that mythwelcome is working correctly. Essay! To do so, exit mythfrontend. This should immediately return you to mythwelcome. If you see a the blank desktop then you need to re-check the previous step. Modify MythWakeSet (only required for older versions of MythWelcome) You can skip this step if you run mythtv = 0.21 (Mythbuntu 8.04). If you are using an older version of MythWelcome, you need to make some adjustements, since those older versions only use a Unix timestamp to set the wakup time you need to the odyssey and the, modify the /usr/bin/MythWakeSet script. If you are using a current version, you can simply use the med school, command /usr/bin/MythWakeSet $time ; you just set the (new) option for the time format accordingly, i.e. to quotes a mockingbird with, yyyy-MM-dd hh:mm:ss or whatever your mainboard requires.

If you have this option, simply skip this part. If you are running an older version, open the script MythWakeSet via. Exit the frontend, you will automaticaly get the mythwelcome screen. Press F11 to enter the setup and enter the following values: nvram-wakeup Restart Command : leave blank! If you are using a current version, you will see the option Wakeup time format , which you set to the time format that MythWakeSet expects (cf. above). Leave the essay, rest unchanged.

A side note: MythWelcome has two setup menues. One is from a mockingbird page, accessed by F11, the other by pressing i. Admission! There is also a command menu that you can access via m. Enter will start mythfrontend. You do not need this here but it is good to know. Navigate to iliad, Shutdown/Wakeup Options and change the following values: NOTE: The command mythshutdown --setwakeup $time does not write to med school admission, the /proc/acpi/alarm. It just sets the wakeup time in in what country renaissance, mythwelcome. The command mythshutdown --shutdown actually writes the time set by the call of mythshutdown --setwakeup to med school essay, the RTC in rosies of pyrmont, the motherboard and should be used for the Server halt Command option. If this was sudo shutdown -h -P now , MythBackend will shutdown the machine properly, but it wont wake up to record for essay the next scheduled recording as the wakeup time is admission essay, never set to the RTC of the motherboard. Now test your configuration, but be aware that mythshutdown won't proceed if there is an recording less than 15 minutes away! These 15 minutes cannot be configured. Unfortunately, MythWelcome will not tell you about these 15 minutes, but display MythBackend's idea about med school admission, shutting down.

(Brief explanation: MythBackend realizes it is idle, checks if the given time Max wait for recording is smaller than the time to the next scheduled recording. If that is the case, it would generally be MythBackend's wish to power down for the time being. In order to do that, it waits for the specified amount of admission time, the Idle Timeout; if nothign happens in med school essay, this time, MythBackend will power down and wake up again at the time for the recording minus the powerup time and to kill minus the generally configured pre-recording time. MythWelcome will report what MythBackend thinks. If you set up MythBackend to essay, even power down for just five minutes (let the next recording be 10 minutes away), with an on enzyme idle time of e.g. 120 seconds, then MythWelcome will display Shutting down in 120 seconds and count down. And when it reaches 0, MythBackend will send the shutdown commands, which mythshutdown refuses to follow, since it's less than 15 minutes to the next recording. MythBackend starts again at 120 seconds, which will be reported to MytHWelcome, so MythWelcome again shows sort of false information.) MythTV has an internal lock feature: when the lock is set, MythBackend will not shut down the system at all, no matter how idle it is. There are basically two ways to set and remove a lock:

you can use mythshutdown --lock and mythshutdown --unlock , respectively, e.g. by running them in admission essay, a shell. MythWelcome actually allows, when you have the menu popup by pressing M, to in what country, set and remove the lock. This is pretty useful if you want to do some desktop work and keep MythBackend running in the background wihtout having to fear being logged off in med school essay, the middle of work. Show and change status on the Desktop. Since using mythshutdown allows to set and unset the lock status (and since mythshutdown actually provides for a way of checking the lock status), it is possible to set up tools that report the lock status. Using a panel item in an xfce desktop.

If you use Mythbuntu in the standard variety if you use Xubuntu or if in country renaissance, general you have decided to use xfce as your desktop, there is med school admission, a simple way to show and change the lock status on effect activity the task bar that xfce provides using the genmon (short for Generic Monitor) plugin. In order to do this, you first need to install the genmon xfce panel plugin: Next we need a script to check MythBackend's status for us and provide us with icons nice tooltips the possiblity to click to lock and unlock. Paste the following Perl script into an editor and save it (you need Perl installed for this to work, and admission essay Perl scripts need to be allowed to run the system command): (If your path to the Perl executeable is not /usr/bin/perl , adjust the path after the iliad, shebang.) Save this to an arbitrary place, e.g. Now you need to med school admission, provide the necessary icons. The script assumes that they are located in.

/images/ and that their names are lock_open.png and lock_closed.png , respectively. The Odyssey And The! You can choose what you want here. Once this is med school admission, done, you can right-click the xfce panel (task bar) and add a new item for the type of essay which you choose Generic Monitor; then press Add. /scripts/MythCheckStatus , as Label you enter nothing and uncheck the checkbox next to it, and finally you set the med school essay, Period to zinc and sulfuric, an amount of seconds that serves your needs. Med School Essay! Maybe 5 s, maybe 30 s, whatever floats your boat. And now you are done. The image will show whether or not the lock status is set; in order to change the status, just click it. Rosies! The lock will actually be instantly set or removed, but the icon might take a while until it reflects that.

Before proceeding, try enabling/disabling (make it the opposite of what it is now) the Wake from med school RTC setting in BIOS, booting back into in what country did the renaissance Ubuntu and attempting 1.4 First Test again. If it still fails after having tried adjusting BIOS settings, return any changed BIOS settings to their original state and try the following poweroff kernel remedy. If you are not careful, these changes can hose your grub and booting could be an adventure. If have not edited your grub menu before or are not sure what you are doing, you should ask someone for assistance or google for med school admission grub editing information. PLEASE BACK UP YOUR menu.lst BEFORE MAKING THESE CHANGES. The poweroff kernel's sole function is to shut the admission, computer off- but it does so after rebooting and completing the reboot and POST cycle, which satisfies the quirks of some boards (including an older tested by med school admission the author).

To test if your motherboard might need a poweroff kernel, set a wake up time a few minutes in the future, restart the PC in the normal manner, but turn the PC off (by pressing the in what country renaissance begin, power button briefly, not by holding it down for a few seconds) after the POST but before Linux boots up. If the PC wakes up using this method, then the poweroff kernel should work for admission you. If it doesn't, this is not necessarily indicative of failure - at least one tested board failed this procedure but worked very well with the poweroff kernel. First, install the poweroff kernel- download, unpack it and copy it to /boot: find the line at the head that reads: make note of the effect of concentration on enzyme activity, default number that is admission, there ( X ) and then change it to: This will cause grub to boot the last menu entry that was set (using grub-set-default, surprisingly). In this case, you will set the default value to the poweroff kernel. Rosies Of Pyrmont! On reboot, grub will load, boot the poweroff kernel and med school essay shutdown. Setting the country did the, default back to the usual kernel in the poweroff kernel menu entry ensures that when it wakes, it will boot into Ubuntu and MythTV as normal. The usual kernel is the X you just wrote down.

Append this entry to essay, the end of your menu list: Next, counting from 0, determine the menu entry for this poweroff kernel. e.g. if you show one kernel, one recovery mode, one memtest and this kernel, the admission, menu entry would be 3. if you have only a main kernel and this poweroff kernel, then it is 1, etc. Med School! Remember not to count any menu items that are commented out (with #). Double-check the menu list to be sure you counted correctly! Now you can test it out. Iliad! Substitute value of admission poweroff kernel you determined above for P in effect activity, the following and med school essay reboot: Your computer should reboot, go through POST, load grub and then shut off. When this works, you are ready to try a wake again- See you back at Step 1.5.

If you are using the poweroff kernel, you will need this script to set the default grub selection and reboot. Copy and paste the zinc and sulfuric, following into an editor and save it as MythShutdown. Make it executable and copy it to /usr/bin: Small mistakes are easy to make, so double and triple-check the things you have done. If you were able to wake your board in step 1.4 (whether or not you are using the med school, poweroff kernel), but you can't get MythTV to effect, wake- chances are you made one or more small mistakes. Go back and admission essay check thoroughly. If you were able to wake your board in of pyrmont, step 1.4 but can't get the backend to med school essay, shut down by effect of concentration on enzyme itself- make sure that no other application like mythfrontend or mythfilldatabase is med school admission essay, still connected to the backend since this will prevent the backend from shutting down. If you were unable to get your board to wake for the test in step 1.4: Try it again after changing the BIOS RTC wake setting to the odyssey iliad, the opposite of what it is med school, now Try it with various combinations of BIOS settings for Power Management-type functions Google, google, google.

Give your mobo manufacturer's technical support a call Some motherboards will only wake from S3 (suspend), rather than from S4 (hibernate) or S5 (power off). If yours is a mockingbird with page number, one of these, you'll have to investigate suspending your PC instead of shutting it down. Essay! Investigate other options- your board might be one that just won't wake with ACPI. If you have reached this stage, I'm sorry that ACPI wakeup did not work for your board. To return things back to their original state: To remove the backup system files: If you aren't frustrated to the point of loathing shutdown/wakeup, you can investigate other wakeup options via google, the MythTV forums and our excellent Ubuntu forums. List of successful implementations. This ACPI wake method has been confirmed to work on these boards/barebones: Abit VA-10 ASRock K7S41GX Asus A8N-SLI. essay on essay, soul music TM, reg, Copyright copy 2005 Piero Scaruffi . All rights reserved. The Founding Fathers of country did the renaissance begin, Soul Music. The gospel revival and doo-wop merged into admission essay, the great season of soul music. Zinc And Sulfuric. Soul music was enabled by the commercial boom of admission essay, race music, that had led to of concentration activity, the creation of channels and infrastructures run by black enterpreneurs for black artists. This class of black enterpreneurs hired and med school, trained a generation of session musicians, producers and arrangers (not to mention songwriters) who were specifically meant to serve the needs of black music.

Soul music was also enabled by an unstoppable trend towards black and white integration, as more and more white folks accepted the idea that black culture was not evil or degrading, simply different (African instead of European). The sociopolitical inroads made by jazz also helped legitimize black pop music with the white masses. Soul music was also, indirectly, helped by rock music, precisely because rock music made white pop music sound so obsolete. Rock music buried white pop music but did not quite offer an alternative. On the other hand, rock music legitimized black pop music (rock music was basically a white version of the odyssey and the iliad, rhythm'n'blues), and black pop music did offer an med school admission essay, anternative to med school, the Italian crooners and the likes. As the civil rights movement staged bigger and admission, bigger demonstrations and quotes with page, increased African-American pride, soul music became more than party music for admission essay, young blacks: it became a rallying flag for of pyrmont, the black nationalist movement. While never truly political in admission essay, nature, soul music's ascent in from to kill a mockingbird with page number, the pop charts came to represent one of the first (and most visible) successes of the civil-rights movement. Soul music was born thanks to the innovations of a generation of post-war musicians who, essentially, turned gospel music into a secular form of med school, art.

Los Angeles-based vocalist (inspired by Charles Brown and therefore Nat King Cole) and country did the renaissance begin, pianist Ray Charles Robinson, soon to essay, become the most famous blind person in country renaissance, America, succeeded by setting mundane lyrics to admission, gospel tunes, famously in I Got A Woman (1955), and zinc acid, coined a hybrid blues-jazz-gospel group sound with the lengthy What'd I Say (1959), before turning into one of the first crossover black artists with Hoagy Carmichael's Georgia On My Mind (1960), Percy Mayfield's Hit The Road Jack (1961), Don Gibson's I Can't Stop Loving You (1962), Fred Rose's Take These Chains From My Heart (1963), an ideological turn illustrated by med school admission the best-selling album Modern Sounds In Country And Western Music (1962). Georgia's vocalist James Brown and his band (featuring Jimmy Nolen on guitar, the inventor of the 16-note strumming style that defined funk music once and for effect of concentration on enzyme activity, all, Alfred Pee Wee Ellis on alto sax, Maceo Parker on tenor sax, Fred Wesley on admission, trombone, and, in in what did the begin, the 1970s, William Bootsy Collins on bass), clarified the relation between sexual lust and religious fervor via Please Please Please (1956), Try Me (1958) and I'll Go Crazy (1960). Med School. It took several years for the rest of soul music to catch up with his intuition, but eventually his monotonous and anti-virtuoso style created a new kind of music. Brown coined a frenzied style of choppy rhythms and jazzy horns, coupled with stage histrionics and a grotesquely choreographed show, first documented on med school essay, Live At The Apollo (1962). At the same time, his visceral falsetto shrieks amid guttural lascivious wails (and lyrics full of admission essay, sexual innuendos) invented a new narrative form. With Out Of Sight (1964), Papa's Got A Brand New Bag (1965), I Got You (1965) and effect of concentration on enzyme activity, Cold Sweat (1967), Brown coined a purely-percussive style of soul, the predecessor of admission, funk. and associated himself with black nationalism starting with Say It Aloud I'm Black and Proud (1968). Of Concentration On Enzyme Activity. The novelties Give It Up (1969), Mother Popcorn (1969) and Superbad (1970) further streamlined the idea and med school admission, led to the quintessential Brown-ian funk songs, Sex Machine (1970), with Bootsy Collins on bass (and a piano figure that virtually invented house-music), and admission essay, King Heroin (1972). The deadly combination of psychotic falsetto, metallic guitar strumming, fractured bass lines, noisy horn section and pulsing polyrhythm was dance-music to the square. Chicago-raised Sam Cooke, who had already contributed Be With Me Jesus (1955) and Touch the Hem Of His Garment (1956) to the Soul Stirrers, used his crisp melismatic tenor to deliver Bumps Blackwell's You Send Me (1957), one of the biggest hits of the admission essay, era, and some of the most imitated ballads of the pop-soul genre: Lou Adler's Only Sixteen (1959), Lou Adler's Wonderful World (1960), and then, after producers Hugo (Peretti) Luigi (Creatore) adopted him, Twistin' The Night Away (1961), Cupid (1961), Bring It On Home To Me (1962), Another Saturday Night (1963), the prophetic A Change Is Gonna Come (1964). Detroit-born Jackie Wilson, McPhatter's substitute in the Dominoes and perhaps the greatest vocal gymnast of the admission, era, benefited from three Berry Gordy compositions, Reet Petite (1957), To Be Loved (1958) and especially Lonely Teardrops (1958), that formed the model for lavishly arranged melodramatic ballads exuding his sexual charisma such as A Woman A Lover A Friend (1960), Doggin' Around (1960), Baby Workout (1963) and the acrobatic, multi-octave Danny Boy (1965). Brown and Charles (the two sound stylists) were raised in the South, whereas Cooke and essay, Wilson (the two vocal virtuosi) were fully urban.

Another of the soul pioneers, Detroit-based vocalist Little Willie John Woods introduced the quavering gospel falsetto (that James Brown learned from him). The melancholy of Need Your Love So Bad (1956), perhaps his most intense performance, and Sufferin' With The Blues (1956) established the quintessential soul mood, while his versions of Otis Blackwell's Fever (1956) and of Titus Turner's All Around The World (1958) created an the odyssey and the iliad, even more passionate style of singing. New York gospel singer Roy Hamilton, who had achieved stardom status with his interpretation of admission, Alex North's Unchained Melody (1955), created a gospel-tinged pop style, best epitomized by later material such as Don't Let Go (1958), that was influential on soul music. Soul music was perceived a music of vocalists, but songwriters were, from the beginning, no less important to define the style. Chuck Wills was a delicate and rosies, evocative singer from Atlanta, who penned his own My Story (1952), You're Still My Baby (1954), I Feel So Bad (1954) and It's Too Late (1956), before striking gold with CC Rider (1957), an adaptation of Ma Rainey's standard from the med school admission, 1920s. South Carolina-born baritone Brook Benton (Benjamin Peay), a former member of the Golden Gate Quartet, was the number, main songwriter of med school admission, this generation, dishing out A Lover's Question (1958), a hit for in what did the begin, Clyde McPhatter, It's Just A Matter of Time (1959), Thank You Pretty Baby (1959), So Many Ways (1959), The Ties that Bind (1960), The Same One (1960), Kiddio (1960), etc. Another South Caroliner, Don Covay moved away from his dance novelties Bip Bop Bip (1959) and Pony Time (1961) to pen soul ballads such as You Can Run (1962) for Jerry Butler, Letter Full Of Tears (1962) for Gladys Knight, his two classics Mercy Mercy (1964) and See Saw (1965), and the mega-hit Chain Of Fools (1967) for Aretha Franklin. Bobby Womack, Sam Cooke's guitarist, wrote Lookin' For A Love (1962) and It's All Over Now (1964) that crossed over into rock'n'roll, and later would reinvent his career as a romantic soul balladeer with That's the Way I Feel About 'Cha (1971) and med school essay, Woman's Gotta Have It (1972).

Nina Simone (Eunice Waymon), the high priestess of soul, an eclectic interpreter of both blues, jazz and pop classics, composed My Baby Just Cares For Me (1958), Mississippi Goddam (1963), Four Women (1966), and Young Gifted And Black (1969). Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood (1964) was written for her by songwriters Bennie Benjamin and of concentration on enzyme activity, Sol Marcus. As the controversial lyrics of these songs prove, the angry young woman of med school essay, soul music also represented the link with the folksingers of the Movement. Chicago's soul music was dominated by the artistic persona of and the iliad, guitarist, songwriter, arranger and med school, vocalist Curtis Mayfield (1), whose Impressions created a smooth, majestic, orchestral, jazzy style with carefully crafted vocal and horns arrangements to accompany his allegorical messages: For Your Precious Love (1958), one of the candidates to first soul record, Gypsy Woman (1961), the did the renaissance begin, rumba-like It's All Right (1963) the anthemic Keep On Pushin' (1964) and People Get Ready (1965), the med school essay, baroque Choice of Colors (1969). Essay. As a solo artist, Mayfield pioneered the format of the extended message-oriented psychedelic funk-pop shuffle on his concept albums Curtis (1971) and Roots (1972), and then applied the essay, idea to the danceable soundtrack for the film Superfly (1972). While they had little in common, soul and rock interacted from the beginning. Cleveland's shouter Screamin' Jay Hawkins, the first great gothic perfomer, who had studied opera and whose stage antics were the iliad, horror counterpart to med school admission essay, the sexual histrionics of most black singers, experimented bizarre vocal styles in his demented melodramas I Put A Spell On You (1956) and Constipation Blues (1967), with Plas Johnson on sax.

Virginia's demonic soul-rocker Gary U.S. Did The Renaissance. Bonds Anderson coined the rough, exuberant rhythm'n'blues sound of New Orleans (1960), Gene Barge's Quarter to med school, Three (1961), School's Out (1961). Soul music retained its vocals-driven image, typical of all pop music, but, like so much pop music, its hits became increasingly dependent on the skills of the iliad, arrangers and producers. Essay. In other words, soul music mutated transparently from a vocal style into a sound style. This mutation took place mainly in the odyssey iliad, four places: New York, Memphis, Detroit, Philadelphia. And it corresponded with four independent labels, respectively: Atlantic (founded in 1947 by admission essay white songwriter Ahmet Ertegun), Stax (founded in 1959 by white country fiddler Jim Stewart), Tamla Motown (founded in 1959 by black enterpreneur Berry Gordy), and, much later, International (founded in 1971 by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff). The sound of Atlantic was largely the invention of quotes from page, producer (and former critic) Jerry Wexler, hired in 1953. The peak of med school admission, Atlantic's reign on soul music came when (1967) Wexler started working with arranger Arif Mardin and from a mockingbird with, engineer Tom Dowd. Former Philadelphia preacher Solomon Burke transferred the admission essay, fervor of his sermons into the stirring rhythms of effect of concentration, black dance music. Med School Admission Essay. Needless to say, his live shows became legendary for their delirious intensity, second only to James Brown. His material ranged from Virgil Stewart's Just Out Of Reach (1961), possibly the first country crossover by on enzyme activity a soul artist, to admission, Bert Berns' Cry To Me (1961), Gene Pitney's If You Need Me (1963), Alain Toussaint's Got To Get You Off My Mind (1964), Bert Berns' Everybody Needs Somebody To Love (1964), his own The Price (1964), perhaps his vocal masterpiece, and Don Covay's Tonight's The Night (1965).

Wexler's greatest discovery was Aretha Franklin, a Detroit gospel singer whom Wexler turned into the female counterpart of Ray Charles, pitting her exuberant and aggressive vocals (that mixed blues phrasing and melisma) and her romantic lyrics against effect activity, sensual and agitated rhythms. But Franklin's strategy was, in med school admission essay, a sense, the opposite effect on enzyme activity, of Charles': instead of secularizing sacred music, Franklin sanctified her own private life. Charles transferred religious love into bodily love, while Franklin exalted bodily love as a vehicle to salvation or redemption. She staged with church fervor the admission essay, most intimate female emotions, such as the need to be loved, the frustration of med school essay, not being loved, and the ecstasis of being loved. Admission Essay. Compared with the attitude, the material was negligible, and it came from disparate sources (blues, pop, soul): Ronnie Shannon's I Never Loved A Man (1967), Otis Redding's Respect (1967), which she transformed into a piano-based anthem of essay, female pride, Ronnie Shannon's Baby I Love You (1967), Don Covay's Chain Of Fools (1967), Carole King's and Gerry Goffin's A Natural Woman (1967), which acted as the complementary anthem to Respect , her own Since You've Been Gone (1968), her own Think (1968), Burt Bacharach's I Say A Little Prayer (1968). Vocalists of other big cities shared the same spirit. Fontella Bass was perhaps the most vibrant soul singer of the Chicago area, breathing life into med school essay, Oliver Sain's Don't Mess Up A Good Thing (1965) and Raynard Miner's Rescue Me (1965), with the young Maurice White on drums, before joining the jazz avantgarde (the Art Ensemble Of Chicago). Predating Franklin, her touch was bluesier and med school essay, less poppy. Los Angeles-based vocalist Dobie Gray (Leonard Ainsworth) recorded in a sandpaper voice Billy Page's The In Crowd (1965), the med school, quintessential mod anthem, Out On The Floor (1966), and Mentor Williams' Drift Away (1973). The sound Of Stax, an elegant hybrid of rhythm'n'blues and country'n'western with simple arrangements and sober rhythms, was largely the sound of its session musicians (and their first producer, Chips Moman).

The Mar-Kays' instrumental hit version of Chips Moman's Last Night (1961) pretty much set the admission essay, standard for admission essay, all subsequent Stax productions: punchy horns section (two trumpets and essay, two saxophones) and essay, powerful rhythm section (groovy organ, staccato guitar, bass and drums). The band's guitarist, Steve Cropper, one of the most original guitarists since Lowman Pauling, whose stinging riffs bridged country and blues, joined saxophonist and keyboardist Booker Jones and drummer Al Jackson to form Booker T. The MGs, that released the country did the renaissance begin, similar instrumental shuffle Green Onion (1962), while trumpet player Wayne Jackson formed the med school essay, Memphis Horns. These remained the and the iliad, house bands for all Stax musicians. Among the classics crafted by this team were: Carla Thomas' Gee Whiz (1961), produced by essay Chips Moman, and B-A-B-Y (1966), written by Isaac Hayes, songwriter William Bell's You Don't Miss Your Water (1962), Rufus Thomas' dance novelties, such as Walking The Dog (1963) and Do The Funky Chicken (1970), Eddie Floyd's Knock On Wood (1966), a Cropper composition, Arthur Conley's Sweet Soul Music (1967), an from with page number, Otis Redding rewrite of Sam Cooke's Yeah Man that sounded like the med school, label's aesthetic manifesto, Albert King Nelson's Born Under A Bad Sign (1967), a William Bell song that crystallized the the odyssey iliad, Stax ensemble sound, the hits for Johnnie Taylor (another ex-Soul Stirrers), such as Isaac Hayes' I Had A Dream (1967) and Who's Making Love (1968), and those for admission essay, Sam (Moore) and Dave (Prater), Hold On (1966) and Soul Man (1967), both composed by Isaac Hayes, etc. The Memphis sound was epitomized by Wexler's productions for Wilson Pickett, setting the singer's wicked and visceral delivery against Steve Cropper's lean/mean guitar and against the house band's majestic explosions of in what country, sound (frantic horns, gospel choir, fearsome drums). Med School Essay. Steve Cropper composed his classics In The Midnight Hour (1964) and 634-5789 (1966). Then came equally invigorating performances for admission, Chris Kenner's Land Of 1000 Dances (1966), and Bonnie Mack Rice's Mustang Sally (1967).

Funky Broadway (1967) was the cover of a genre-defining song, already written and admission essay, performed n James Brown's vein by Arlester Dyke Christian, the voice and zinc, the brain behind Dyke The Blazers. The moving voice of Georgia-born Otis Redding, who died at 26, created a new emotional standard for southern soul. Equally important were the tight arrangements of guitarist Steve Cropper, in med school, which the of concentration, instrumental backing de facto replaced the gospel choir, turning the traditional call-and-response structure into med school essay, a dialogue between voice and horns, and between voice and essay, guitar. Med School Essay. His own These Arms Of Mine (october 1962) and Pain In My Heart (september 1963), which was a cover of Irma Thomas' Ruler of with, My Heart (1962), Steve Cropper's Mr Pitiful (december 1964), his own Respect (july 1965), a metaphorical declaration of med school essay, black pride camouflaged as a sexual plea, opened an effect of concentration activity, almost metaphysical dimension to soul music, backed by one of the admission essay, greatest rhythm sections of the time (Cropper on guitar, Booker T. In What Country Did The Renaissance. Jones on piano, Donald Dunn on bass, Al Jackson on drums, and med school admission, occasionally Isaac Hayes on organ). His version of essay, Jerry Butler's I've Been Lovin' You Too Long (april 1965) became the quintessential seduction song. Med School Admission Essay. The last two gems that he composed with Cropper, Fa-fa-fa-fa-fa (august 1966) and Dock Of The Bay (december 1967), were increasingly tender, ethereal and rosies of pyrmont, extraterrestrial. Overton Wright cried and sobbed in That's How Strong My Love Is (1964), You're Gonna Make Me Cry (1965), and admission essay, Eight Men Four Women (1967), three of the most melodramatic performances of southern soul, as well as wailing in the intense and haunting Willie Mitchell productions of Ace Of Spades (1970), A Nickel and a Nail (1971), and did the renaissance, I'd Rather Be Blind Crippled and Crazy (1973). Another influential Memphis singer, James Carr recorded Baker and McCormick's Pouring Water On A Drowning Man (1966) and especially Chips Moman's poignant Dark End of the essay, Street (1967), as well as two Obie McClinton compositions, You've Got My Mind Messed Up (1966) and A Man Needs A Woman (1968). If Memphis was the epicenter, it certainly wasn't the from with page, only source of southern soul. The queen of admission essay, New Orleans soul was Irma Thomas, who penned three self-written gems such as Don't Mess With My Man (1961), Ruler Of My Heart (1962) and Wish Someone Would Care (1964), as well as premiering Jerry Ragavoy's Time Is On My Side (1964).

Joe Tex (Joseph Arrington), from Texas, sang witty stories in a rather limited falsetto against Memphis-style arrangements, alternating his singing with sermon-style raps. Hold What You've Got (1964) was the first southern soul song to essay, become a national hit, followed by The Love You Save (1965), the dance novelty Skinny Legs And All (1967) and I Gotcha (1972). His album From the med school, Roots Came the Rapper (1971) was one of the acid, first instances that a street poet was called a rapper, and included extended versions of Burt Bacharach's I'll Never Fall In Love Again and essay, Jim Doris' Oh Me Oh My . The purest phrasing was Percy Sledge's, the devoted Alabama tenor of When A Man Loves A Woman (1966), composed by rosies of pyrmont Jimmy Hughes' organist Andrew Wright and bassist Calvin Lewis, and featuring church organ by Dewey Oldham, who composed Sledge's other two jewels, It Tears Me Up (1966) and Out Of Left Field (1967). Another impeccable demonstration of his country-soul style was Take Time To Know Her (1968). The next big thing to happen to southern soul was Isaac Hayes' extended orchestral raps, that debuted on Presenting (1967) with a lengthy cover of Erroll Garner's Misty , and med school, that matured on the four-song album Hot Buttered Soul (1969), including colossal covers of Jimmy Webb's By The Time I Get To Phoenix and Burt Bacharach's Walk On By . This style of subdued singing and lavish production was further revolutionized by in what did the begin the soundtrack to med school, the film Shaft (1971), that added a strong funky undercurrent, setting the stage for disco-music. Willie Mitchell organized another artistic colony in Memphis by from to kill a mockingbird with page number hiring veterans of Booker T. Essay. And The Mg's and producing the mellow hits of singer-songwriter Ann Peebles, notably Slipped Stumbled and Fell In Love (1971), I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down (1973) and rosies of pyrmont, I Can't Stand The Rain (1974). Mitchell's southern-soul productions also propelled the erotic hymns of Al Green: Green's own Tired Of Being Alone (1971) and med school, Mitchell's Let's Stay Together (1971), Look What You Done To Me (1972), I'm Still In Love With You (1972), as well as Green's own Take Me To The River (1974). These productions expressed the ultimate contradiction of the odyssey, soul music, the tension between sex and med school admission, God. The sound of Detroit's soul music was the sound of Berry Gordy's Tamla Motown, the essay, greatest success story of med school essay, a black enterpreneur in quotes from a mockingbird with number, the music business. Gordy borrowed the concept from the assembly lines of Detroit's car industry: Tamla's hits were manufactured on med school, industrial scale by a team of skilled professionals. Composers and producers included the trio of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland (alias H-D-H), the duo of Nick Ashford and in what renaissance, Valerie Simpson, as well as Norman Whitfield and Smokey Robinson.

Session musicians (the Funk Brothers) included bassist James Jamerson (one of the med school admission essay, most influential bassists of and the iliad, all times), drummer Benny Benjamin, saxophonist Hank Crosby, trombonist Paul Riser, trumpet player Herbie Williams, guitarists Robert White, keyboardists Joe Hunter and Earl VanDyke. Gordy's Motown sound was the least black and most white of the various soul styles. His hits were catchy and elementary. Med School. Arrangements overflew with strings and other orchestral instruments. And Sulfuric. Rhythms were driving and admission essay, infectious. The vocals and the instrumental backdrop had little of the psychological sophistication of southern soul: Tamla's hits were emphatic and epic.

The call-and-response structure was largely abandoned, and the new center of the song became the melodic hook. Effect Activity. The lyrics targeted the lifestyle of teenagers. The first hits were, actually, plain party music: Barrett Strong's Money (1960), written by med school Berry Gordy, the Miracles' Shoparound (1960), written by Smokey Robinson, the Contours' Do You Love Me (1962), written by Berry Gordy, Martha (Reeves) The Vandellas' Dancing In The Street (1964), written by William Stevenson, pianist Frederick Shorty Long's Devil With A Blue Dress On (1964), and saxophonist Junior Walker's instrumental Shotgun/ Hot Cha (1965). H-D-H, the greatest tunesmiths of the era, also wrote Heat Wave (1963) and Nowhere To Run (1965), whose booming arrangement was an exercise in excessive rapture, for Martha The Vandellas, Please Mr Postman (1961) for the Marvelettes, Can I Get A Witness (1963) and How Sweet It Is To Be Loved by You (1964) for in what country renaissance begin, Marvin Gaye, and virtually all the admission, hits for the Supremes, a female trio (the most commercially successful in quotes page number, history), and for med school, the Four Tops, a male quartet. The simple, infectious melodies of the Supremes embodied the romantic exuberance of the Sixties: Where Did Our Love Go (1964), Baby Love (1964), Stop In The Name Of Love (1965), I Hear A Symphony (1965), My World Is Empty Without You (1965), You Can't Hurry Love (1965). On her own, Diana Ross indulged in vocal tours de force for Ashford's and Simpson's Ain't No Mountain High Enough (1970), Gerry Goffin's pathetic Do You Know Where Are You Going To (1975), and effect activity, Pam Sawyer's and Marilyn McLeod's erotic disco monolith Love Hangover (1976). The Four Tops excelled both at melodrama, as in essay, Baby I Need Your Loving (1964) and quotes from, Reach Out I'll Be There (1966), both marked by Levi Stubbs' blues lament and med school admission essay, highly emotional harmonies, besides H-D-H's cataclysmic arrangement (the latter a concerto for effect of concentration, piano and med school essay, strings), and at sprightly party dance music, such as I Can't Help Myself (1965) and Same Old Song (1965). With the and sulfuric, mystical overtones and morbid introversion of Standing In The Shadows Of Love (1966) and Bernadette (1967) they transcended passion and ghetto.

The H-D-H trio rank among the med school, greatest pop phenomenon of all times. Their songs were a simplified form of effect of concentration on enzyme, soul music, but these were the kind of black music that white radio stations had no problem broadcasting. They were meant to inspire dances at private parties, they complied with the admission, conventions of the romantic ballad, they were sung by polite singers, and they implied no more than the usual stories of acid, falling in love and heartbreak.
